Frequently asked questions about... Lip Enhancement
What are lip fillers?
The lip fillers used by DermaLuxe Aesthetics are injectable gels containing Hyaluronic Acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar chain molecule found in all skin and soft tissues throughout the body. It attracts and binds to water in the skin, providing volume and hydration. Dermal fillers are manufactured to produce a clear, sterile gel for injection into the skin.
In the UK, there are many different brands of dermal fillers available. Not all hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are the same, each brand has a range of different fillers designed for specific results. For example, you would need a softer dermal filler for lips compared to a firmer dermal filler for cheek contouring.
How long do lip fillers last?
The effects of lip fillers can last between 3 to 12 months depending on the type of filler used. The longevity varies from person to person depending on their skin type, lifestyle and the amount of filler injected. In some cases we see lip fillers lasting over 12 months.
At DermaLuxe Aesthetics we only use premium brands of dermal filler for our lip enhancements. The market leading fillers we use last the longest and give reliable, predictable results. The results will gradually reduce over time as your body breaks down the filler, until your skin returns to its previous state. You can choose to have additional procedures to maintain the look.
What brand of lip fillers do you use?
DermaLuxe Aesthetics use only premium branded dermal fillers, with FDA approval for your safety. The fillers we use are market leading, last the longest, and have been used for many years with safe and predictable results. Not only do we use the best dermal fillers on the market, our Nurse Practitioner is a highly skilled injector, having attended training by some of the world’s leading cosmetic Doctors and Nurses. The fillers we use most are Juvederm and Teosyal. If you have a particular brand you prefer, or you have had dermal fillers previously, please inform us before your appointment.
With dermal fillers, the results are almost entirely based upon the skill of the injector and not the filler itself, so to speak. To concentrate on the filler itself, would be similar to asking Picasso which paint he used to create his paintings, and attempting the same with the identical brand, and expecting the same results based on this. Two different injectors can use the same filler and both create very different results. The filler to be used for your treatment is selected based on the information you give us during consultation, and on which we feel will suit you best as an individual, given the various properties of the fillers and the area being treated.
Are lip fillers painful?
For lip enhancement, a filler containing local anaesthetic (a numbing agent) is used (if this is deemed safe for you during consultation). This helps to numb the area during the injections. As well as this, for all lip filler procedures a strong local anaesthetic numbing cream is applied to numb the skin and make the procedure more comfortable. We use small needles to ensure a more comfortable treatment for you. Our injection technique has been perfected over the years, and we have never had a patient not complete their lip enahncement with us. Infact, most patients say "Oh, thats not as bad as I was expecting!" which we take as a compliment!
Are there any side effects of lip fillers?
Lip enhancement is a medical cosmetic procedure and should therefore be performed by a medical professional such as our Advanced Nurse Practitioner. This helps to reduce the risk of any adverse events.
Rare but possible side-effects include redness, swelling, bleeding, bruising, pain, itching, infection, abscess formation, lumpiness, prolonged firmness, nodule formation, granuloma formation, local necrosis, discolouration, allergic reaction and acne. Rarely a scab can form at the treatment site, which can result in a scar. All adverse events are very rare, these will be discussed with you at your appointment. At DermaLuxe aesthetics we are trained in complications management so you can be reassured that you are in safe hands.
